External Merchandise Trade Statistics for February 2007
*******************************************************

In February 2007, the values of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods both showed year-on-year increases.  The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released today (March 26) the external merchandise trade statistics for February 2007.

As the trade flows in January and February of each year tend to show considerable volatilities due to difference in timing of the Lunar New Year Holidays, it is useful to analyse the trade figures for these two months taken together.

Taking January and February as a whole to neutralise the distortion caused by the difference in timing of the Lunar New Year Holidays, the value of total exports of goods rose by 10.2% over the same period in 2006.  Within this total, the value of re-exports increased by 13.5%, while the value of domestic exports decreased by 35.3%.  Concurrently, the value of imports of goods increased by 7.8%.  A visible trade deficit of $11.9 billion, equivalent to 3.1% of the value of imports of goods, was recorded in the first two months of 2007.

In February 2007, the value of total exports of goods (comprising re-exports and domestic exports) increased by 11.6% over a year earlier to $171.4 billion, after a year-on-year increase of 9.2% in January.  Within this total, the value of re-exports increased by 14.6% to $165.2 billion in February, while the value of domestic exports decreased by 34.7% to $6.2 billion.  Concurrently, the value of imports of goods increased by 1.3% over a year earlier to $178.9 billion in February 2007, after a year-on-year increase of 14.1% in January.  A visible trade deficit of $7.5 billion, equivalent to 4.2% of the value of imports of goods, was recorded in February 2007.

Comparing the three-month period ending February 2007 with the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis, the value of total exports of goods rose by 3.5%.  Within this total, the value of re-exports increased by 4.3%, while the value of domestic exports went down by 13.8%.  Meanwhile, the value of imports of goods increased by 1.4%.

Commentary

A government spokesman noted that merchandise exports continued to perform well on entering 2007, with total exports registering double-digit growth in the first two months of the year.  It is noteworthy that while total exports to the Mainland remained strong, those to the EU showed notable improvement.  Total exports to the US also stayed firm despite the expected weakening of demand in this market.

Looking ahead, the near-term trade performance would continue to hinge on the global economic environment, particularly the evolving situation in the US economy.  Exchange rate movements are also another factor to gauge.
