Man sentenced for assaulting public officers
********************************************

A man was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, suspended for one year, by the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts today (March 26) for assaulting public officers.

The man, who dropped a cigarette butt on a pavement near the junction of Tak Hoi Street and Tsuen Wan Market Street, Tsuen Wan on January 23, refused to co-operate and assaulted two Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) officers when being stopped and asked for personal particulars for completion of the fixed penalty notice. With Police assistance, he was arrested.

The man was also fined $1,500 for depositing litter in public place, and $3,500 for failure to provide personal particulars and proof of identity for inspection.

An FEHD spokesman reminded the public to observe public hygiene regulations.

"Littering offenders should co-operate with law-enforcement officers who are empowered to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for violation of public hygiene laws," he said.

"Resorting to the use of force to avoid penalty is not only wrong, but also carries serious legal consequences."
