The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (April 20) the April 2007 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, four feature articles entitled "An Analysis of Hong Kong's Exports", "Key Findings of the 2006 Population By-census", "The Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels Sectors in Hong Kong" and "The Asset Management Industry in Hong Kong" are included.
"An Analysis of Hong Kong's Exports"
Hong Kong is an externally oriented economy and the performance of external trade has significant impact on the economy of Hong Kong. In 2006, the value of Hong Kong's imports amounted to $2,599.8 billion, while that of total exports was $2,461.0 billion. The ratio of the value of total exports to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 1.67, while that of the value of imports to GDP was 1.77. This feature article analyses performance of Hong Kong's exports during the period 1996-2006.

"Key Findings of the 2006 Population By-census"
A population by-census was conducted in Hong Kong in July to August 2006. The information collected in population censuses / by-censuses is vital to government planning and policy formulation. Data on small areas form the basis of district development and service planning programmes of the government, while comprehensive information on population sub-groups, such as the elderly and single parent families, facilitates the planning of welfare policy and social service programmes. Summary findings of the 2006 Population By-census have been released on February 22, 2007 and published in the report entitled "Hong Kong 2006 Population By-census Summary Results". This feature article has extracted some key findings from the report, broadly highlighting the salient features of the population in the whole territory and also some selected characteristics of District Council Districts.

"The Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels Sectors in Hong Kong"
The C&SD conducts annual economic surveys for compiling statistics on the operating characteristics of various sectors of Hong Kong. The statistics compiled are useful to both the Government and the private sector in formulating policies and making decisions. The sectoral economic statistics, comprising a range of information on various trades, are also useful reference for business operators and investors in decision-making.
This feature article first analyses the principal operating characteristics of the wholesale, retail and import and export trades, restaurants and hotels sectors of Hong Kong in 2005, and then analyses the business environment of the sectors, by making reference to some industry averages and analytical ratios derived from statistics on their operating characteristics.

"The Asset Management Industry in Hong Kong"
Hong Kong has now developed into a leading international financial centre and a premier capital formation centre for the mainland of China. Asset management is seen as a rising star in the financial market of Hong Kong. This feature article presents the operating characteristics, economic contribution and short-term business performance statistics of the asset management industry in Hong Kong in recent years, so as to promote a better understanding on this proliferating sector.
