Secondary and primary school teachers can apply for census jobs as Chief Enumerators and Assistant Chief Enumerators for the 2011 Population Census via the Online Job Application System from Tuesday (January 11).
Degree students can apply for the other posts as temporary field workers (TFWs), i.e. Checker, Enumerator and Centre Assistant, from early February. Secondary Six and sub-degree students can apply for the posts of Enumerator and Centre Assistant from late January.
The Census and Statistics Department will recruit a total of about 18,300 TFWs to support the data collection work for the 2011 Population Census, which will run from June 30 to August 2.
Assistant Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Mr Stephen Leung, said, "Population censuses have been conducted once every decade in Hong Kong since 1961. The objective is to obtain up-to-date benchmark information on the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population and on its geographical distribution.
"Through joining the census workforce, teachers and students can learn more about our society and help build a better Hong Kong by participating in this meaningful project."
Training will be provided to TFWs before they are deployed for on-site fieldwork or operational support. Most of them will be assigned to collect the required data from individual persons of each household in quarters and vessels during the face-to-face interview phase of the Census, which will commence in mid-July. Some TFWs will be deployed to work at the 2011 Population Census Office during the entire Census period to answer enquiries or handle returned questionnaires.
Applicants must be permanent residents of and lawfully employable in Hong Kong. They should possess a mature personality and be able to work independently. Good knowledge of written Chinese and English and fluency in Cantonese and English are also part of the job requirements. Student applicants should also meet the academic requirements in three subjects: Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics.
All applications should be filed via the Online Job Application System for the 2011 Population Census (jobs.census2011.gov.hk/jobs) before the application deadlines for respective recruitment targets. Details of the TFW posts, honoraria, recruitment targets and application periods are as follows:
