Reports releasing key statistics on various major economic sectors in 2009 published
***********************************************************

     The following five reports presenting the key statistics on the business performance and operating characteristics of various major economic sectors in 2009 have been published by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD):

(i) Key Statistics on Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Industrial Sector in 2009;
(ii) Key Statistics on Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Building, Construction and Real Estate Sectors in 2009;
(iii) Key Statistics on Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors in 2009;
(iv) Key Statistics on Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Transportation, Storage and Courier Services Sector in 2009; and
(v) Key Statistics on Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Information and Communications, Financing and Insurance, Professional and Business Services Sectors in 2009.

     The key statistics presented in these reports were compiled from the results of the 2009 Annual Survey of Economic Activities (ASEA) conducted by the C&SD.  They contain a wide range of statistics reflecting the business performance and operating characteristics of various major economic sectors for 2009, mainly including:

* number of establishments;
* number of persons engaged;
* value of sales of goods, business receipts and other income;
* compensation of employees;
* operating expenses;
* gross surplus;
* value added; and
* gross additions to fixed assets.

     Starting from the reference year of 2009, C&SD conducted ASEA as an integrated survey in place of separate annual economic surveys on different major economic sectors conducted in past years, with a view to achieving better harmonisation and streamlining of survey processes.

     Moreover, the Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification (HSIC) Version 2.0 has been used in ASEA starting from the reference year of 2009, to replace HSIC Version 1.1 used in previous rounds of annual economic surveys.  All figures given in the aforesaid reports were based on HSIC Version 2.0.  To maintain data continuity and comparability before and after implementation of HSIC Version 2.0, the C&SD has re-compiled survey results dating back to 2005 in accordance with HSIC Version 2.0.  Summary statistics for 2007 and 2008, which are re-compiled based on HSIC Version 2.0, are also contained in these reports to facilitate reference and comparison.

     The statistics in the reports are complementary to those relatively timely but simpler statistics on the current situation of various major economic sectors as provided by the relevant quarterly or monthly surveys.  They together constitute a comprehensive series of sectoral statistics to facilitate readers in grasping the salient features and developments of various major economic sectors.

     These reports are available for downloading free of charge from the website of C&SD at www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/statistical_report/commerce_and_industry/index.jsp .

     Enquiries regarding the aforesaid reports can be directed to the relevant Sections of C&SD shown in the attached table.
