Renowned yueqin and zhongruan soloist Ms Lui Kwan-on will perform with the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (HKYCO) in "An Extraordinary Concert with Exuberant Ethnic Passions", at 8pm on January 22 at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall auditorium.
Organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, yueqin and zhongruan maestro Lui Kwan-on and the HKYCO will jointly perform the zhongruan concerto, "In Remembrance of Yunnan", at the orchestra's annual concert.
Under the batons of conductors Tsui Ying-fai and Kwok Kin-ming, the HKYCO will perform a repertoire designed to fill the audience with exuberant ethnic passions. Compositions will include the "Journey to Lhasa" by Kuan Nai-chung, "The Epitome of Folk Tunes" by Li Huan-zhi, "Nam-do Arirang" by Back Dae-ung, "Northeast Wind" by Sui Li-jun and "A Scenery of Yi" by He Zhanhao.
Currently teaching at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Academy of Chinese Theatre, Lui Kwan-on has been an active soloist in the Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan since winning a solo yueqin performance award in 1982. Embracing a strong and characteristic performance style, Lui is well known for special yueqin and zhongruan techniques that encompass both modern and traditional elements. In 1992, Lui was the first yueqin virtuoso to give a yueqin recital in Beijing - an achievement that won her critical acclaim.
The HKYCO has grown to over 90 members since its establishment in 1978. The orchestra has taken part in numerous local performances and major festivals, including the 47th National Day Celebration Concert, the 1997 Reunification Spectacular and the "Music of the Dragons" concert in 2002. In 2000 and 2007, the orchestra performed during exchange programmes in Beijing, Xian, Nanjing, Wuxi and Jiangyin.
