CS visits Southern District (with photos/video)
***********************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, today (January 12) visited Southern District.

Accompanied by Chairman of Hospital Authority and Chairman of the Medical Sub-Committee of Community Care Fund, Mr Anthony Wu, Mr Tang met healthcare staff and patients in the hospice centre, cataract centre and the cardiac catheterisation laboratory of Grantham Hospital.  During his visit, he learned more about the medical services currently provided by the Hospital Authority and the requirement for medicine, medical equipment and other special treatments by patients with end-stage chronic illnesses, in particular the services not provided free of charge under the existing healthcare system.

Mr Tang then proceeded to the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Jockey Club Lei Tung Integrated Services Centre where he was briefed by staff on the centre's children and youth services.  He visited children receiving after-school services at the centre.  Many of these children come from families with working or single-parents, or families receiving the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance.

Mr Tang said that the Community Care Fund was examining how to better assist the underprivileged in the areas of education, home affairs, medical services and welfare.  He found today's visit very useful in gaining insight into the role of Community Care Fund in healthcare and education.

Mr Tang then took a sampan and crossed the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter.  He was briefed by the District Officer on the planning for the beautification projects along the waterfront.  Mr Tang said that tourism could promote local economy and improve people's livelihood.  He hoped that the beautification projects could be implemented soonest possible to further develop the tourism of the district.
