The Music Office Youth Choir (MOYC) and Music Office Children's Choir (MOCC) will jointly perform "Songs of Nature" at the Ko Shan Theatre, at 3.30pm on January 30 (Sunday).
Organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the two choirs will praise the beauty of nature at their annual concert.
Under the batons of conductors Dr Angelina Au, Stephen Ho and May Ho, the choirs will sing a variety of well known compositions on nature. These include "The Beautiful Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss II, "What a Wonderful World" from the movie "Good Morning, Vietnam", "Caresse sur l'océan" from the French movie "Les Choristes" and "The Blue Bird" by Charles Stanford.
Other highlights include "Dawn Drives Away Darkness", which has been specially composed for the concert and will be premiered by the MOCC, and "Thunderstorm at Kunyang".
The concert will also feature Italian folk song "El Grillo" (The Cricket), "For the Beauty of the Earth" by John Rutter, "The Sea, My Homeland" by famous Chinese composer Wang Liping, Irish folk song "The Last Rose of Summer" and "The Promise of Living" from the opera "The Tender Land".
Established in 1980, the MOYC has more than 80 members with ages ranging from 15 to 25. In 2009 at the "A Voyage of Songs" International Choral Festival, the choir was awarded a gold diploma in both the Chamber Choir and Mixed Choir Open Category competitions, as well as the Category Winner Award in the Mixed Choir Open Category and the Jury Award. The MOYC has collaborated with many music groups including the reputable Bach Choir from the United Kingdom and the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (the United States of America). Since embarking on the first overseas tour in 1997, it has concluded successful tours to Singapore, Japan and Malaysia.
Since its establishment in 1981, the MOCC's membership has grown to over 70, with ages ranging from 8 to 15. The choir's recent repertoire includes both Western and Chinese choral works, including several local premieres. The choir has been invited to participate in a number of major performances, including the 2nd International Children's Choir Festival (China), the 1999 and 2002 Hong Kong International Children's Choral Festival and a joint concert with the Macao Youth Choir (Core Juvenil de Macau) in 2007.
Tickets priced at $60, $40 and $20 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
