The Steering Committee of the Pilot Green Transport Fund held its first meeting this morning (March 21) to discuss and agree on the Committee's operational details and criteria for approving subsidy applications.
Attending the meeting, the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, thanked members of the Steering Committee for supporting the initiative and looked forward to their valuable advice and expertise to make the Fund a success.
He called on the transport sectors to make use of the Fund to test out green and innovative transport technologies, thus contributing to better air quality and health for people living in Hong Kong.
Chaired by Professor Tony Chan, President of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Steering Committee comprises members drawn from academic institutions and transport trades as well as representatives from relevant Government departments. Motor vehicles are the main source of our roadside air pollution and they also contribute about 18% of local greenhouse gas emissions. Promoting green transport will not only improve air quality but will also reduce carbon emissions, which helps avert global climate change. Furthermore, it will open up business opportunities for green transport technologies.
To encourage the transport sector to test out green and low-carbon transport technologies, the Government has set up the $300 million Pilot Green Transport Fund. The Steering Committee was formed to assess and advise on subsidy applications.
The Fund will start accepting applications from March 30 and details will be available soon on the Environmental Protection Department
website.
