Alice Theatre Laboratory to present Beckett's absurdist play "Endgame"
************************************************************

After performing "Beckett on Stage: Silence & Whisper" and "Beckett on Stage II: Reminiscence & Traces", Alice Theatre Laboratory is set to stage yet another masterpiece in its exploration of Samuel Beckett's play "Endgame" in May.

"Endgame" is seen as being as significant as "Waiting for Godot", and is regarded as a play that fuelled the evolution of Western theatre at the crossroads of modernism and postmodernism.

"Endgame" depicts the life of four people who survived a catastrophe and are stranded in a cellar: one is blind and incapable of walking; one is able to stagger but unable to sit down; and a couple without feet live in two rubbish bins. Struggling in their long refuge, they live with their conversation and the tense relationship between the master in the group and his servant. As the situation worsens and the relationships reach the verge of breakdown, how far can they go?

The director of "Endgame" is Andrew Chan, winner of Best Director at the Hong Kong Drama Awards and the Hong Kong Theatre Libre. The cast includes Patrick Pak, Eric Leung, Kan Lap-keung and Chan Shui-yu.

Alice Theatre Laboratory is devoted to experimental performances. In the 2008-11 seasons, "Seven Boxes Possessed of Kafka" (premiere, rerun, Shanghai tour, Beijing tour and Macau tour), "Fear and Misery of the Third Reich" (premiere, rerun and Beijing tour), "Beckett on Stage II: Reminiscence & Traces", "The Maids" and "1001 Nights of Pasolini" were critically acclaimed and were nominated for and received a number of awards at the Hong Kong Drama Awards and the Hong Kong Theatre Libre. The company was also invited to perform in the Mainland for cultural exchange. CNNGo praised Alice Theatre Laboratory as one of the five most watchable Hong Kong theatre companies.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), "Endgame" (performed in Cantonese) by Alice Theatre Laboratory will be staged at 8pm on May 25 to 27 (Friday to Sunday) and at 3pm on May 26 and 27 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Cultural Activities Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall.
