Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign yesterday (December 13). Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.
A total of 230 verbal warnings and 1 281 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road safety regulations during the campaign conducted from December 7 to 13.
During the period, Police issued 957 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 145 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, 81 summonses for failing to comply with prescribed traffic signs, 51 summonses for crossing within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than at the crossing and 27 summonses for climbing over/through kerbside fence/central reservation to a carriageway.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed over 8 000 publicity leaflets at 442 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.
"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
