The award-winning theatre show "Eight Hundred Years of Hatred, Eight Hundred Years of Healing", derived from the work of Osamu Tezuka, will be re-run in September. The show is produced by Art Peak Theatre Works and is one of the programmes in the Re-run Run Show series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
"Eight Hundred Years of Hatred, Eight Hundred Years of Healing" was awarded Best Sound Design and named among the Top Ten Most Popular Productions at the 21st Hong Kong Drama Awards, in which it also had nominations for Best Overall Performance, Best Director (Tragedy/Drama), Best Stage Design, Best Costume Design and Best Lighting Design.
This production is adapted from a chapter about alien creatures in Japanese comic artist Osamu Tezuka's work "Phoenix". The story is about Sakonnosuke, who goes to the Horaiji Temple one rainy night to seek a Buddhist nun, Yaobikuni. She has been brought up as a boy by her tyrannical father against her wishes, and she wants her own identity back. Knowing that the nun has cured her father's terminal illness, she wants to stop the healing. But Sakonnosuke is caught in a time warp and travels back in time to 30 years earlier. The experience is an enlightening one for her as she sees life differently from then on.
Legend has it that taking the blood of the Phoenix would allow one to gain eternal life, and thus begins humankind's endless killings in a scramble for immortality. The legendary Phoenix can transform into any living being and freely traverses time and space to observe what humankind would do to attain eternal life. It provides insights into humans' love and hate, and even life and death, and offers an opportunity to review the true meaning of life.
The production is adapted and directed by Chan Wing-chuen and produced by Chan and Queendy Kwong. The creative team includes Tsang Man-tung (stage design), Kenneth Leung (costume design), Gabriel Fung (lighting design), Chan Wai-fat (composition and sound design), Adrian Yeung (video design) and Joyce Ma (make-up design). The main actors are Wong Hiu-yee, Priscilla Lai, Simon Lo, Lawrence Lau, Fimmy Wong, Guthrie Yip, David Lam and Kelly@Super Gear.
Performed in Cantonese, the show (re-run) will be staged at 8pm on September 13 and 14 (Friday and Saturday) and at 3pm on September 15 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Kwai Tsing Theatre. Tickets priced at $200, $160 and $120 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
