The spokesperson for Tung Wah Eastern Hospital (TWEH) gave the following update today (August 2) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in the geriatric ward:
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. One more 76-year-old male patient was confirmed as a VRE carrier today, but he had no clinical symptoms. The patient is still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation. He is in stable condition.
The hospital will continue its enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation in the wards. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
