Over 120 literary works were nominated for the 12th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature, with the entries ranging from works by veteran local writers to those of budding authors. The winning works this year include poetry reflecting the writer's thoughts on city life, an essay expressing genuine feelings of daily life, a fiction work that uses the Cantonese dialect to describe the inner world of the underprivileged, literature on science and suspense fiction for children and youth, and beautiful poems for children.
The 12th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature was organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The nominated literary works were assessed by adjudication panels. After thorough selection and discussion, five Biennial Awards and five Recommended Prizes were awarded.
Officiating at the prize presentation ceremony today (November 28), the Chairman of the Public Libraries Advisory Committee, Professor John Leong, said that the Biennial Awards, which have been held since 1991, are regarded by the local literary community as an important event in Hong Kong literature. The Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Raymond Young, also attended the ceremony to present prizes to the award winners.
The awards aim to encourage Hong Kong writers to pursue excellence and produce more creative works, as well as urge local publishers to publish quality literary books.
