The Controller of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH), Dr Leung Ting-hung, today (June 3) announced that the 2015 Southern Hemisphere Seasonal Influenza Vaccination (SH SIV) Programme would expand to cover the elderly aged 80 or above starting from tomorrow (June 4).
"The eligibility will be expanded to community-living elderly people aged 80 or above tomorrow so that more senior citizens can receive free SH SIV from the Hospital Authority (HA) and designated Elderly Health Centres (EHCs) of the DH. Elderly persons aged 85 or above currently eligible will remain so after the expansion. We hope that this can better protect the elderly from the possible summer influenza season," Dr Leung said.
As of yesterday (June 2), about 8 200 doses of SH SIV had been administered to eligible community-living elderly people aged 85 or above from the HA and the DH under the Government Vaccination Programme since May 20, while about 46 000 doses had been ordered by residential care homes for the elderly (RCHEs) for their residents and about 31 000 doses had been administered under the Residential Care Home Vaccination Programme (RVP) since May 8.
The logistic arrangements will remain unchanged. Ten designated EHCs of the DH will provide vaccination to all eligible elderly persons, while all 18 EHCs will provide vaccination for eligible members. The EHCs will provide vaccination from 9am to 1pm and from 2pm to 5pm from Monday to Friday excluding public holidays.
Elderly persons should bring along their Hong Kong identity card and vaccination record (if available) for verification. Members should also show their member's booklet, while non-members should provide their information about significant medical problems, history of allergies, contact telephone number and address for record purposes.
