SCIT visits Tsuen Wan (with photos)
***********************************

The Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, Mr Joseph WP Wong, gained an insight into the operation of a Local Community Economy Project in Tsuen Wan during a visit this afternoon (March 8).

Located in Chung On Street, Chuen Lung Street and Sha Tsui Road, the project is known as the "Tsuen Wan Jewellery and Goldsmith Square".

Mr Wong, accompanied by the Tsuen Wan District Council Chairman, Mr Chau How-chen, and the District Officer (Tsuen Wan), Mrs Alison Lau, toured the area, visited a jewellery shop in Chung On Street, and chatted with a number of shopkeepers and customers.

Mr Wong was told that since its launch in 2003, the project has become a major attraction among Hong Kong people and foreign visitors, and has successfully promoted the overall local community economic development in Tsuen Wan.

He then visited the newly-opened Nina Tower which is a 42-storey hotel in Yeung Uk Road.

Adjoining the Nina Tower is the Teddy Tower, a soon-to-be-completed 89-storey hotel and office building. Both towers are linked together by a "sky bridge" on the 42nd floor.

Mr Wong was pleased to learn that there would be comprehensive banquet, convention and exhibition facilities on the lower floors of the two towers which would further help support Hong Kong's development as an international convention and exhibition centre.

He ended his visit by meeting members of the Tsuen Wan District Council and Tsuen Wan Trade Association at a restaurant in Tsuen Wan Market Street. Views were exchanged on the availability of computers for use by the public, students in particular, and TV reception and access to Internet in both the urban and rural areas of Tsuen Wan.
