Following is the transcript of remarks (English portion) at a media session by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, in Beijing this afternoon (April 9):

Chief Executive: I am very grateful for this appointment, particularly the support given me by the Central Government and by the people of Hong Kong. I will address their concern and address what I've pledged with humility and total dedication. The road that we have travelled since unification has not been smooth, but all along we have had selfless support from the Central Government. I am sure that the SAR Government will, with the support of Hong Kong people and the Central Government, strive to achieve new goals and make our own contribution to the success of the country as a whole. I also really hope that Hong Kong people would not only be the beneficiary of the Administration's work, but rather be active participants in what we are trying to do. And they are able to say that "I care because Hong Kong cares about me." I have had good discussions with the President and the Premier covering a wide range of things today.   In sum, they are in full support of what I have pledged in my manifesto for the election, particularly creating a harmonious society, care for the grassroots, and progress further on political development. I will continue to do this, as I said, with dedication and humility.

Reporter: The Premier said universal suffrage in Hong Kong will be carried out in a gradual manner, and how do you think in the next coming five years? How far we can go towards that target?

Chief Executive: My pledge had been in the manifesto during the election that I would resolve completely the question of universal suffrage election for the Chief Executive and the legislature. That proposal, that pledge, is fully supported by the President and the Premier.
