Olympic Equestrian Jumping Fence winning designs on display (with photos)
************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of The Equestrian Company:

The winning designs of the recent Jumping Fence Design Competition held by the Equestrian Company are on public display at the Atrium of InnoCentre at 72 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, from today (April 12) to April 22.

The exhibition features 75 designs, including the winners, runners-up and finalists in the Junior, Senior and Professional categories. Each entry comes with a description of the design concept written by the designer.

The winning designs will be used as a source of reference in designing the fences for the Jumping Discipline in the Olympic Games Equestrian Event to be held in Hong Kong in August, 2008.

"We received more than 2,000 entries from Hong Kong and overseas, and all of them did well in highlighting elements of Chinese culture and the Hong Kong identity. The winning designs were particularly brilliant in crystallising these unique attributes into jumping fences for the Olympics," Director of Promotion and Marketing of the Equestrian Company  Mrs Nancy Pang said. Mrs Pang was also on the judging panel.

"The InnoCentre is a fitting place to host this exhibition because it is a cradle of creativity, and 'innovation' is one attribute in Hong Kong's brand image. We hope the exhibits will inspire both design enthusiasts and general visitors alike to appreciate the cultural features of China, particularly Hong Kong, as well as the spirit of the Beijing Olympics - Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People's Olympics," she said.

The winning design in the Professional Category, by 22-year-old Mr Yeung Chi-hang, a student in the School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, features a bamboo steamer containing dim sum, a favourite delicacy in teahouses all over China for many centuries.

Top prize in the Senior Category went to Miss Zhang Shuqi, a 22-year-old student at the Capital University of Economics and Trade in Beijing. Her winning entry, entitled "Flying Horse and Startled Swallow", is a modern expression of two traditional Chinese motifs - the "knife and horse actress" in Peking Opera, and five "sandy swallow kites" suggestive of the five Olympic rings.

The winning entry in the Junior Category, entitled "Hong Kong - the Gourmet's Paradise", was from Miss Leung Hoi-ying, a 15-year-old student at Tuen Mun Catholic School. It features a number of Chinese and Hong Kong motifs, such as bauhinia flowers, a teapot-and-teacup set, a pair of chopsticks, and a bowl of noodles suggestive of longevity.

Jumping is one of the three disciplines in the Olympic Equestrian Event. It requires the rider and the horse to clear a series of 10 to 13 obstacles in the prescribed order. The other two disciplines are Dressage (often described as "horses performing ballet") and Eventing (comprising Jumping, Dressage and Cross-Country).
