International Museum Day activities on May 12 and 13

    More than 30 museums and heritage institutions from Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong Province will jointly organise a series of activities on May 12 and 13 for "International Museum Day 2007, Hong Kong".

     "International Museum Day 2007, Hong Kong" is organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in support of the International Museum Day (IMD) first designated on May 18, 1978, by the International Council of Museums. Through various activities, IMD will give people the chance to better understand the missions and functions of museums.

     Museum Panorama, a highlight programme of the IMD, will be held at the Piazza of Hong Kong Cultural Centre on May 12 and 13. Open from 10am to 6pm both days, the colorful Panorama will provide visitors with entertaining booth games and a series of educational activities. Twenty-nine booths are set up to feature the participating cultural institutions. Other entertaining activities include computer and interactive games, photo-taking corner, mini pony, solar observation, video shows, demonstrations on tea-drinking, model making, puzzle game, demonstration of conservation equipment, and dancing performance. Souvenirs will be available at various booths.

     In addition, more than 100 illustrated catalogues and books published by Leisure and Cultural Services museums, along with 50 souvenirs, will be on sale at up to 30% discount at the Panorama. The selected publications, priced from $4 to $747, cover diversified topics in art, history, heritage, film, science and technology, as well as astronomy. To name a few, the "Lu Shoukun: New Ink Painting" and "Huang Yongyu at 80: An Art Exhibition" by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the "Tea Ware by Hong Kong Potters 2005" by Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware, the "East Meets West: Cultural Relics from the Pearl River Delta Region" and "City of Victoria" by Hong Kong Museum of History, "The Defence of Hong Kong - Collected Essays on the Hong Kong-Kowloon Brigade of the East River Column" by Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence, the "Enlightening Trivialities - Ancient Chinese Pastimes" by Hong Kong Heritage Museum, "The Ancient Culture of Hong Kong: Archaeological Discoveries in Sha Ha, Sai Kung" by the Antiquities and Monuments Office, the "@location" by Hong Kong Film Archive, and the "Body Parts" by Hong Kong Science Museum. Book lovers should not miss this opportunity while stocks last.

     To coincident with the IMD, educational and entertaining programmes including lectures on the work and functions of museums, workshops, guided tours, demonstrations, children's programmes, video programmes and behind-the-scenes tours will be organised at different museums in May.

     To encourage people to visit the exhibitions by various museums more frequently, and to enjoy its facilities, a gift will be given out to those who purchase a department museum yearly pass in May. There are three types of yearly pass -- individual, family and concessionary. Pass holders are entitled to unlimited admission to the Hong Kong Science Museum (excluding some special exhibitions), Hong Kong Space Museum (excluding the Space Theatre's programmes), Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong Museum of History, Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence and Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum during the validity period. They can also enjoy 10% discount on participation in museums' extension activities.
