Two men were sentenced to three months' imprisonment, suspended for a year, by the Tuen Mun Magistrates' Courts today (April 26) for illegal pig slaughtering activities.
A spokesman for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said the men were found guilty of operating a slaughterhouse without a licence and possessing prohibited food. They were each sentenced to three months' imprisonment, suspended for a year, for the first offence and fined $10,000 for each of the two offences.
Department officers raided an illegal pig slaughterhouse at Pak Sha, Yuen Long, during a blitz operation on December 18 last year and seized about 500 kilogrammes of unstamped pig carcasses. The two men were arrested during the operation.
The spokesman stressed that the department would continue to take stringent enforcement actions against all illegal slaughtering activities to protect public health and maintain environmental hygiene.
The maximum penalty for each of the above offences is a fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment.
