The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

The Housing Authority (HA) has published the Sustainability Report 2005/06 covering the Authority's commitments and priorities on the sustainable development of public housing in addition to its environmental, social and economic performance over the past year.

Entitled "Sustainable Housing: New Horizons", the report is an upgraded version of HA's former annually-published Environmental, Health and Safety Report.

"In support of Government's efforts on sustainable development and in view of our achievements on various fronts, we have expanded the scope to include performance on social and economic aspects," a spokesman for the HA said today (April 28).

The report sets out HA's continued efforts and commitment towards the sustainable development of affordable public housing which requires the  full integration of the need for economic and social development with those of conserving the environment.

"To achieve our vision for sustainable housing, we have been striving to achieve better designs which integrate environmentally friendly, user friendly, functional and cost effective considerations," the spokesman said.

The report also highlights the HA's performance on six environmental aspects including estate landscaping and greening, water, air, noise, energy and waste; four social aspects including safety, hygiene and health, employee development and contribution to society; and three economic aspects including business overview, financial performance and managing housing resources to meet market demand.

"The Authority will continue to strengthen environmental, social and economic performance and to implement and develop innovative and cost-effective ways to enhance our business while improving the quality of the living environment in public housing," the spokesman said.

To reduce paper consumption, the report is produced on CD-ROM for distribution to the target audience. It can also be viewed on the HA/HD web site (http://www.housingauthority.gov.hk).
