A Government spokesman said today (April 29) that the Secretary for Education and Manpower, Professor Arthur K C Li, was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the American Surgical Association, the highest recognition that the Association could bestow upon a surgical colleague from a foreign country.

The formal presentation ceremony took place on April 26 at the Annual Meeting of the American Surgical Association held in Colorado Springs, the United States. The award reflects Professor Li’s outstanding contributions to surgery.

“Professor Li is very pleased to have received the honour which is also a recognition of achievements of the surgical sector in Hong Kong,” the spokesman said.

“This honour is the highest recognition that the American Surgical Association can bestow upon a surgical colleague from a foreign country.  So far only 61 surgeons throughout the world have been so honoured.”

In the citation, the American Surgical Association regarded Professor Li as one of the most distinguished surgeons in the world, saying that his accomplishments were myriad and his service to Hong Kong most striking.  The citation also highlighted Professor Li’s robust bibliography in liver surgery and gastrointestinal surgery, showing his influence in surgery, surgical training and research.
