Smart identity card collection reminder
***************************************

The Smart Identity Card Centres will open to the public until May 18 for collection of new identity cards.

"People who applied for their identity cards at the Smart Identity Card Centres on or before March 31, are reminded to collect their new identity cards within the collection period as stated in the 'Notice of Collection'," an Immigration Department spokesman said today (May 2).

People who were absent from Hong Kong during the specified call-up periods and have not replaced their identity cards should apply within 30 days of their return to Hong Kong.  They can book an appointment by calling the hotline 2598 0888 or visiting the ESDlife website at www.esd.gov.hk.  However, they don't have to rush back to Hong Kong just to replace their identity cards.

People who missed their specified call-up periods and have not replaced their old identity cards, should make their applications at any of the Registration of Persons Offices as soon as possible.

"Those born in 1989 or 1996 should apply for smart identity cards at the Registration of Persons Offices when they attain the age of 18 or 11 respectively.  For example, a person born on August 1, 1989, should apply for an adult identity card within 30 days of his 18th birthday on August 1, 2007, or if he is outside Hong Kong on that birthday, within 30 days of his return to Hong Kong. A child born on September 1, 1996, should apply for a juvenile identity card within 30 days of his 11th birthday on September 1, 2007, or if he is outside Hong Kong on that birthday, within 30 days of his return to Hong Kong, " the spokesman said.
