The Cultural Performance Extravaganza on "Beijing and Hong Kong Students Join Hands to Greet the Olympic Games" organised by the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) attracted about 1,200 teachers and students from primary and secondary schools today (May 2).
The extravaganza was one of the highlights of the EMB's "Beijing and Hong Kong Join Hands to Promote the Olympic Spirit ― Moral and National Education Programme 2006-2008" aiming at bringing out students' perseverance in line with the spirit of the Olympics, to enhance their knowledge about the motherland and to foster their national identity.
Today's event featured performances by the Arts Troupe of the Central University of Nationalities as well as the Choir of the Zhengzhou Teachers College and offered students and teachers insights into the unique and diverse culture of the Mainland's many ethnic minorities.
The event, held at the Academic Community Hall of the Hong Kong Baptist University, was officiated by the Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower, Mr Raymond Wong; the Principal Assistant Secretary for Education and Manpower, Dr Catherine K K Chan; the Director of Youth Department and Deputy Secretary of the Liaison Office of The Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, Mr Wang Zhi-min; the Director of the International Department, State Ethnic Affairs Commission, Mr Wang Quan-li; the Vice-president of the Central University for Nationalities, Mr Yun Yu-ming and the Vice-president of the Zhengzhou Teachers College, Associate Professor Zhang Jian-hang.
