A 46-year-old inmate of Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre (SLPC) was found unconscious in his cell by staff of the institution at about 8am yesterday (May 4).
First aid was immediately given at the scene, a spokesperson of the Correctional Services Department said. The inmate was then taken to Tuen Mun Hospital where he was admitted for treatment and observation. He was certified dead at about 1am this morning (May 5).
His relative was informed of his condition and the death. Police have been informed of the incident. An inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
The inmate, surname Cheng, was convicted of manslaughter and was ordered in 1994 to be detained in SLPC for an unspecified period under the Mental Health Ordinance.
