An exhibition, "Tea Ware by Hong Kong Potters 2007", to be held from tomorrow (May 9) to February 18, 2008, at the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware, will give visitors an opportunity to appreciate the deftness and vivid imagination of 69 local potters.
Ninety-one pieces of the ceramic works featured at the exhibition were outstanding entries selected from the competition "Tea Ware by Hong Kong Potters" organised by the Museum of Tea Ware last year.
The tea ware competition and exhibition has been held seven times since it was first launched in 1986. The competition organised last year received entries by 214 participants, and a record number of more than 370 entries were received.
Speaking at today's opening ceremony, the Assistant Director (Heritage and Museums) of Leisure and Cultural Services, Dr Louis Ng Chi-wa, said the result of the competition reflected the enthusiasm and dedication of local professional and amateur potters to ceramic art.
"The kaleidoscopic variety of tea ware on display reflects a great diversity of artistic tendencies, professional training, experience from daily life and the unique perspectives of Hong Kong potters. Their creative ingenuity, meticulous thoughts and innovative talents are also fully demonstrated. This exhibition has provided a golden opportunity for local potters to share their creative experience and for the public to have a glimpse into the fascinating world of contemporary pottery," Dr Ng said.
The works on display were selected by a panel of adjudicators, which included Dr Lai Yat-fong, Professor Yanta Lam, Mr Law Hon-wah, Mr Chris Lo Sze-lim and Miss Wong May-lee. The results are as follows: The First Prize is "The kingdom of eternity" by Kong Choi-ling, the Second and Third Prizes are "anTEAvirus" by Prudence Ma Pui-ting and "Tea ware box" by Siu Kam-han. The Promising Award is "ShouTea" by Enders Wong Sum, the Creative Award is "The dying colony (I)" by Anna Chan Chi-wan, and the Outstanding Workmanship Award is "Heal the world" by Tsang Cheung-shing. The winning entries of the Prize of Excellence are "Teapot on the nets" by Cheng Po-yin, "Tea tasting" by Fu Ming-ho, "Round and bond" by Anna Leung, "Kid's toy" by Anna Li Sin-kwan, "Deep autumn" by Amy Lin Wai-ching, "Segmented tea service" by Antonio Wong Ngok-tung, and "Two snakes enjoying tea" by Luckner Wong Shek-nin.
To complement the exhibition, an educational corner has been set up in the galleries to offer visitors a fascinating insight into the production techniques, forms and designs as well as the decorative skills used in making ceramic tea ware.
Located at 10 Cotton Tree Drive, Central, Hong Kong (inside Hong Kong Park), the Museum of Tea Ware is open from 10am to 5pm daily and is closed on Tuesdays. Admission is free.
