Employer fined for violation of safety rules

     Merito Technical Services Ltd. was fined $25,000 at the Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court today (January 17) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on September 25, 2009 in a workplace at Kai Tin Traction Substation in which a worker was killed by a compressed gas cylinder that exploded while it was being weighed.  Another worker was also injured in the accident.

     According to Sections 6(2)(a), 6(2)(b) and 6(2)(c) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, the employer shall provide and maintain a system of work, make arrangements in connection with handling of substances, and provide information, instruction, training and supervision as necessary to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the safe and health of the workers employed.  Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000.
