The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) today (December 24) launched the Smart Elderly Awards to give recognition to elderly people who use information and communications technology (ICT) actively in their daily life.
The Government has commissioned the Hong Kong Society for the Aged to take charge of the award scheme and co-ordinate with elderly centres and elder academies across the territory to nominate eligible elderly persons for the Awards. The nomination period will close on February 28.
Gold, silver and bronze awards will be given out to elderly persons who have met the requirements within a specified period of time. The award presentation ceremony will be held in April next year.
"The Government is committed to promoting the wider use of ICT among the elderly. We have implemented various measures to enhance the elderly's interest and know-how in ICT, thereby helping them to enhance their quality of life, broaden social circles and strengthen inter-generational integration through technology," a spokesman for the OGCIO said.
A series of promotion activities, including practical talks and sharing sessions on learning resources, will be organised through the scheme to encourage the elderly to learn about and use ICT. A Promotion Day cum Elderly Expo featuring suitable digital products for senior citizens will be held in January.
