Correctional Services officers intercepted a small quantity of suspected dangerous drugs in a letter posted to an inmate on remand at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (December 28), thus stopping an attempt to smuggle dangerous drugs into a correctional institution.
At around noon, officers discovered a small amount of crystal powder wrapped in plastic in the letter during a security check. The case was reported to the Police for further investigation.
The man, aged 27, was remanded for the offence of criminal intimidation.
A spokesperson for the department said, "With effective mechanisms for collecting intelligence, the department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs into correctional institutions and to eradicate their presence there. We are committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."
There have been 155 seizures of dangerous drugs so far this year. Most seizures were made in reception centres.
