Victor Ma, the artistic director of local dance group Y-Space, has teamed up with renowned choreographer Helen Lai for a new production entitled "Suddenly / Frida", to be presented in September.
Inspired by the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, Lai has created a series of "tableaux-dansants" for "Frida" based on Kahlo's paintings "My Birth", "The Wounded Table", "The Two Fridas", "Memory" and "What the Water Gave Me". "Frida" was premiered in 1996 by City Contemporary Dance Company and was restaged in Taipei by Taiwan's Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in the same year.
Choreographed by Ma, "Suddenly" is about incidents. There is no logic - only happenings that weave in and out. Harmonious relationships can suddenly turn sour, the mild and the gentle turn rough and brutal, what is beautiful becomes ugly, and what is calm and peaceful is suddenly maniacal. As Ma explains, "In life, things make sudden twists and turns and catch us unawares, but if we look closely we can find actually there is always a reason, a cause, behind it all."
"Suddenly / Frida" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held at 8pm on September 13 and 14 (Friday and Saturday) at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets priced at $180 and $220 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
