Tenor David Quah to host lecture series on Verdi and Wagner
***********************************************************

A series of lectures on Verdi and Wagner (conducted in Cantonese), to be hosted by tenor David Quah and presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be held in September. In the lectures, Quah will share his insights on the vocal music world of the two opera greats Verdi and Wagner, complete with live demonstrations accompanied by renowned pianist Timmy Tsang.

This lecture series will take the audience into the vocal music world of Verdi and Wagner, the two most influential opera composers of the 19th century. Their musical output has left a rich legacy, not only taking root in their own cultures, but also spreading far and wide, and it is still making an imprint in today's international music world. Participants will listen to some of Verdi's songs in comparison to those of his contemporaries, and will also take a look at Verdi's more well-known works and why and how they are still popular. The lectures will then turn to Wagner's non-operatic works, and see how they became studies for his operas. Last but not least, attendees will explore the various myths that so attracted Wagner and formed the backbone of some of his most important music dramas.

Details of the lectures are as follows:

September 4
Topic: Songs of Verdi & Composizioni da camera - A Comparison to Works by Donizetti, Bellini & Rossini

September 11
Topic: Hits of Verdi - Arias & Choral Pieces

September 18
Topic: Non-operatic Works of Wagner
