Company and its director fined for wage offences

     Yi Lin Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited and its director were convicted at the Fanling Magistrates' Courts on June 21 for failing to pay wages amounting to about $40,000 to two employees within seven days after the expiry of their wage periods, as required by the Employment Ordinance. The company and its director were each fined $40,000 today (July 12). The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     A director of the company was also prosecuted for the allegation that the wage offence was committed with his consent or connivance or was attributable to his neglect.

     "The judgment would disseminate a strong message to all employers, directors, managers, secretaries and other similar officers of companies that they have to pay wages to employees in accordance with the Employment Ordinance," a spokesman for the Labour Department said.

     "The Labour Department does not tolerate the above offences and will spare no effort in enforcing the law and safeguarding employees' statutory rights," the spokesman added.
