HK bans import of poultry meat and products from Delaware Valley in State of Pennsylvania, City of New York in State of New York and State of New Jersey, US

     The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (July 15) that in view of notifications from the United States (US) authorities about outbreaks of low pathogenic H5 avian influenza in Delaware Valley in the State of Pennsylvania, City of New York in the State of New York and the State of New Jersey, it has banned the import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from the three areas with immediate effect for the protection of Hong Kong's public health.

     A CFS spokesman said that Hong Kong imported about 113 000 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 160 million poultry eggs from the US in the first five months of this year.

     "The CFS has contacted the US authorities over the issues and will closely monitor information issued by the World Organisation for Animal Health on avian influenza outbreaks in the country. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation," the spokesman said.
