OCI alerts public against unauthorised insurer

     The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance today (June 15) alerted the public to a company named Winglung Reinsurance Company Limited, which is not authorised by the Insurance Authority under the Insurance Companies Ordinance to carry on any insurance business in or from Hong Kong. Winglung Reinsurance has a website with the domain name http://winglungreinsurance.com. The website also mentions the name of an authorised insurer, Wing Lung Insurance Company Limited, and uses the latter's address as its contact. Wing Lung Insurance Company Limited has confirmed that it has no connection with Winglung Reinsurance or the website.

     The case has been reported to the Hong Kong Police Force for further investigation. Anyone who has provided personal information to the website or has conducted any insurance transactions through it should contact Wing Lung Insurance Company Limited via its hotline at 2309 5555, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force on 2860 5012, or any local police station.

     Any company conducting insurance business in or from Hong Kong must be authorised by the Insurance Authority under the Insurance Companies Ordinance (Cap. 41).
