HK hosts its first international symposium on conservation of textiles and thangkas (with photo)

     The IIC-Palace Museum 2017 Hong Kong Symposium, jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (IIC) and the Palace Museum, opened today (November 24) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Under the theme "Unroll and Unfold: Preserving Textiles and Thangkas to Last", the two-and-a-half day symposium has invited 18 distinguished specialists from East and the West to share their inspirational thoughts on the latest methodologies, strategies, and best practices for preserving textiles and thangkas.
      
     This tripartite venture marks a successful outcome for the IIC-Palace Museum collaboration initiative which followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties following the IIC 2014 Hong Kong Congress. This symposium, which follows the Museum Summit held in June this year, provides another opportunity for more than 250 conservation professionals around the world to connect and share their experiences.
      
     Addressing the opening ceremony at the Chiang Chen Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li, said the symposium underscores Hong Kong's commitment to strengthen professional exchange at a regional and international level, and seeks to expand connectivity for the development of a vibrant cultural landscape in the region.
      
     Other officiating guests attending the ceremony included the IIC President, Ms Sarah Staniforth; the Deputy Director of the Palace Museum, Dr Song Jirong; the Chairman of the Museum Advisory Committee, Mr Stanley Wong, and the Head of the Conservation Office of the LCSD, Ms Evita Yeung.
      
     The Symposium will conclude on Sunday (November 26) morning with five cultural tours and a textile workshop.
