Exchange to promote IP co-operation in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area

     To promote the development of Hong Kong as an intellectual property (IP) trading centre and international law and dispute resolution service centre in the Asia-Pacific region, the Intellectual Property Department together with the representatives of the IP Committee of the Law Society of Hong Kong, the Asian Patent Attorneys Association Hong Kong Group, the Hong Kong Institute of Trade Mark Practitioners, the Hong Kong Bar Association, the Hong Kong Mediation Council of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the Hong Kong Mediation Centre and the Department of Justice visited Guangzhou today (November 29). They paid visits to the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Arbitration Centre, the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Court and the Guangzhou Development District, and exchanged views with relevant local representatives on co-operation opportunities in resolving IP disputes.

     During the visit, the Assistant Director of Intellectual Property (Advisory), Ms Michelle Chong, said, "Hong Kong has experienced practitioners in fields of IP, international legal and dispute resolution services. Through today's visit to Guangzhou with representatives from the legal, arbitration and mediation services sectors in Hong Kong, we hope to further strengthen the collaboration between relevant IP sectors in Guangdong and Hong Kong, and jointly promote the further development of IP trading in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area."

     The exchange is one of the projects under "promoting co-operation on IP in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area actively", which is a new co-operation area agreed on at the meeting of the Guangdong/Hong Kong Expert Group on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights in 2017-18. It aims to explore co-operation opportunities in IP arising from the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area, enhance the standard of high-end IP services in the Bay Area and promote the innovative development of the Bay Area.

     The Expert Group was set up after the Sixth Plenary of the Hong Kong/Guangdong Co-operation Joint Conference in August 2003. It aims at enhancing exchanges and co-operation between the two places on various aspects of IP protection, including promotion and education, training, enforcement, research study and information dissemination.
