FEHD and Customs urges public not to bring meat, poultry meat and eggs into Hong Kong illegally

     The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) said today (February 13) that the FEHD and the Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) have jointly stepped up publicity and education, as well as enforcement actions at various land boundary control points, to deter travellers from illegally bringing meat, poultry meat and eggs into Hong Kong to safeguard food safety. Over the past two weeks (as at February 12), a total of 137 kilograms of illegally imported meat, poultry meat and eggs were intercepted, and prosecutions for the cases concerned will be instituted by the FEHD later.

     According to the Imported Game, Meat, Poultry and Eggs Regulations (Cap 132AK), any person who imports game, meat, poultry or eggs should produce a health certificate issued by an issuing entity from the place of origin or obtain prior permission in writing from the FEHD. Offenders are liable on conviction to a fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment.

     The FEHD reminded the public not to bring meat, poultry meat and eggs into Hong Kong illegally. The FEHD will continue to step up joint enforcement actions with the C&ED to curb the illegal import of the food concerned into Hong Kong to safeguard food safety and public health.
