Hong Kong Customs and Marine Police seize suspected smuggled electronic goods and suspected red sandalwood (with photo)

Customs officers and the Marine Police conducted an anti-smuggling operation on Lantau Island yesterday evening and took enforcement action after having found some persons moving a large amount of goods from a 7-seater private car onto a speedboat at Sham Wat Pier. The persons fled at once with the speedboat, leaving behind the batch of suspected smuggled electronic goods, the suspected red sandalwood, and the 7-seater private car.
Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting an endangered species without a licence is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
