Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tang said that the number of technology crimes has increased almost five times from 2,000 odd cases in 2011 to nearly 13,000 cases in 2020. The amount of loss reached nearly $3 billion last year, which has caused great concern. The recent pandemic has also brought new crime threats. In the face of the ever-changing situation of cyber crimes, the Police would spare no effort in combating crimes and raising public awareness of cyber security in all aspects, he added.
Mr Tang noted that the theme of the competition this year is “Cyber Security Starts From You”. In addition to primary and secondary groups, an open group was added with an aim to further promote cyber security awareness to the general public. Participants were encouraged to share the knowledge they’ve gained in the competition and remind their families and friends to stay alert to cyber security threats.
The Cyber Security Competition 2020/21, organised by the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the Force with the support of the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited and the Hong Kong Extra-Curricular Activities Masters’ Association, has attracted over 12,000 participants. The competition included cyber security quiz, interactive games and presentation. For more details, please visit: www.hkcybersecuritycompetition.net
