Mr Yeung said, "The performance of the Hong Kong football team has been improving progressively. It was also encouraging that the team last month advanced to the AFC Asian Cup finals for the first time in over 50 years. The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau will continue to support the Hong Kong football team. We wish the team to perform well in the matches, and to emerge stronger in every match to showcase Hong Kong athletes' determination and perseverance."
The Government earmarks a total of $68 million every year for driving football development, including subsidising the HKFA in launching the Hong Kong Premier Youth League, assisting clubs in setting up training schools for young players and funding the training and competitions of the Hong Kong football team. In view of the development of the football industry, the Government also allocated over $7 million to the HKFA earlier this year for introducing the Video Assistant Referee system, which is hoped to be on trial run in the 2022/23 season. The system will help raise the level of the Hong Kong Premier League, improve audience experience and allow Hong Kong to host more international football games.
The EAFF E-1 Football Championship is a biennial event. This year is the fourth time the Hong Kong football team will take part in the championship final. The team will depart for Japan this weekend and play against their counterparts from Japan, Korea and China respectively later this month.
