This week, Trending China takes a deep dive into the mainland’s pension system and its move to raise the statutory retirement age.
China has just started a 15-year process to gradually raise the statutory retirement age by up to five years as the nation grapples with an ageing population and a shrinking workforce. It’s the first time the retirement age has been raised since the 1950s, and comes as the state-led pension system faces major financial strain. This Saturday morning on Trending China, CM Chan and Chloe Feng will be joined by Stuart Gietel-Basten, Professor of Social Science and Public Policy at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, to explore the implications of this policy shift. How effective will these measures be in tackling China’s pension dilemma?
