Expert Consultant of the Observatory Captain Klaus Sievers visits the Hong Kong Observatory

From 15 to 17 April 2024, Captain Klaus Sievers, an Expert Consultant of the Observatory, visited the Hong Kong Observatory. As a pilot with a cumulative flight time of 23,000 hours, Captain Sievers is committed to promoting various initiatives for weather and aviation safety.
During the visit, he shared his experience in and views regarding aviation meteorological services from a pilot’s perspective. He reviewed major volcanic ash events that have occurred, and emphasised the importance of more accurate volcanic ash warnings. Captain Sievers further explored the challenges that space weather poses to aviation safety, and presented some global impacts caused by severe space weather in the past. In addition, he held in-depth discussions on the aviation meteorological services provided by the Hong Kong Observatory.
Through this visit, the Observatory has gained a deeper understanding of pilots’ needs and concerns, paving the way for providing safer aviation meteorological services.
